The Brickworks at Bursledon is the only remaining Victorian steam driven brickworks in the United Kingdom. Now a museum open to the public.
Bursledon Brickworks opened in 1897 using machinery powered by steam and using a patented method of drying the bricks allowed these to be made all year. The works finally closed in 1974, still using the same steam powered machinery and manufacturing methods.
Gaining 2* listing it was saved from demolition and thanks to grants from the Lottery and others is now open to the public as the museum of bricks and brickmaking, with the steam engine and machinery still powered up showing visitors the process of mass production of bricks. The museum also house a large collection of bricks, moulds and equipment associated with the history of bricks.
