We plan to deliver peer support groups that model and promote a Nurturing Approach. Provide a Nurturing Training Programme every term and other training opportunities that promote a Nurturing Approach as requested by beneficiaries (e.g. stress management). We will be encouraging and supporting parents to identify and achieve personal goals that strengthen their nurturing ability and provide personal development and volunteering opportunities
Research into parenting styles suggests that an Authoritative parenting style is the most appropriate for supporting children’s development and creating positive outcomes (Diana Baumrind, Maccoby and Martin). Authoritative parents have high expectations of maturity, can understand how their children are feeling and teach them how to regulate their feelings. The Nurturing Approach sets out a clear set of characteristics and strategies that empower parents to be more authoritative
Our organisation has been involved in group work for almost 30 years and has developed skills in managing and maintaining peer support groups. The volunteers managing the groups will all be trained in the Nurturing Programme allowing them to model and promote the strategies and culture promoted by the programme to adults and children.
We will use resources provided by Family Links a national charity that manage the Nurturing Programme and work alongside our local authority partners and other service providers and charities. Our main partners are the community we serve. We call our beneficiaries “Members” and as members we encourage them to be actively involved in the project’s management, delivery and planning. We are the only agency in Wirral that provide this service.
