Unusually high rainfall in the African Central Lakes Region has led to heavy flooding in the southern province of Rwanda. These floods have killed many, made thousands homeless and taken their crops and livestock. Many of the affected are farmers who subsist on less than US$2 per day. The flooding is a severe blow to their families’ livelihood particularly their children.
Feeding those sheltering is the immediate concern but disruptions to the transport system hamper the movement of people and goods, negatively affecting the food supply system. The destruction of crops and livestock is increasing the cost of food stuffs in the local markets, For the foreseeable future both adults and children will need assistance with food, clean water to drink, household tools, hygiene and female sanitary products, hoes, blankets and warm clothes, gum boots, and seeds to replant as soon as possible in order to avoid prolonged hunger in the near future.
The money donated will be passed on to the Nyaruguru Diocese in the western province which is working in partnership with the government and the Red Cross to provide building materials for the homeless, and food and basic needs to all those impacted by the floods.
