The Whitechapel Gallery presents modern and contemporary art, enjoying an unparalleled reputation for identifying the great artists of tomorrow.
Founded in 1901 to bring great art to the people of the East End of London, the Gallery has grown in size and impact, and enjoys an international repute for excellence. Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Frida Kahlo were all first brought to London audiences by the Gallery when they were little known in the UK. We continue this unique contribution to culture by premiering British and international artists. Each year we present an ambitious programme of exhibitions and events; solo shows, historical surveys, commissions, collection displays, archive exhibitions, film and public events. Our education and community programmes offer free activities helping to engage audiences and inspire the artists of tomorrow.
