For lots of us, setting a future goal or having a vision is a great source of motivation and incentive for self-improvement, whether this be progressing in our career, learning a new hobby, or even saving for a holiday – all these ambitions can help us to move forward on our journey’s. However, just take a moment to think how difficult your goal would be to achieve if you had to also face the daily obstacles of living in poverty. Having aspirations can be particularly important to our Big Issue North vendors. Health providers have established links between setting goals and an individual’s positive mental wellbeing. When you have an attainable vision, this can generate new motivation, healthier behaviours whilst also increasing an individual’s self- confidence and drive.
Here at Big Issue North, our team continues to provide opportunities beyond just earning a daily income. Each week, over 350 vendors visit our regional offices across Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Sheffield to buy their magazines and to engage with our staff; who are available to offer support with developing skills, accessing English language courses, housing or health advice, financial guidance and family assistance – which as a whole enables vendors to achieve their own aims, improving their lifestyles for good.
Your support is desperately needed to make the visions of vendors their reality, and to give people the opportunity to make a real success of breaking the barricades of poverty currently in their way. 57% of vendors said that selling the magazine directly improved their confidence and motivation by providing a structure and routine to their day and offering an activity to engage with social interactions.
