Fundraising is our top priority for spring 2022, so that we can offer practical support to welcome a family to the UK and our town, Belper, Derbyshire as soon as possible.  Belper Refugee Welcome are applying to welcome a family presently housed in a refugee camp in a country like Turkey or Lebanon. This family will have been identified by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) as in need of a safe and supportive home in a welcoming community.This scheme is fully endorsed by the British Government. Life in a new country presents many challenges, especially if you’ve had to flee your home as a result of war or persecution.
The family will be starting from scratch in a country with completely different systems and organisations. We will need to provide translation services and a guiding and helping hand as well as furnishing and equipping a house for the family for two years. Our support will also include finding suitable education and training including help with language for all family members.  Translation and interpretation services will be a key cost as well as an essential element of ensuring that the family can integrate and engage with the necessary systems and bureaucracy, whilst their language skills improve. We will be helping the family to find work so that they can become self-sufficient.  Some of the  incidental costs that we may  have to support them with are associated with this, but we anticipate there will be others along the way. Our aim is to make their welcome here as smooth as possible in all aspects of arrival and settling:  housing, education,  training or work and social integration.
We already have a house promised at an affordable rent for 2 years  and have around £3000 towards over target and have a number of new fundraising initiatives and grant applications on the way. But donations of small or large amounts, including on-going support through direct debits or one offs such as text donations will help us achieve our target in spring 2022.
