On May 18 at the iconic York Hall, Bethnal Green I will be standing up to fight in a white collar boxing bout to raise money for the Charlie Watkins Foundation.
Charlie Watkins was only 22 when he took his life in March 2017. Sadly, Charlie never recovered from the tragic loss of his mother when he was only nine years old. Charlie is one of many examples of young people who suffer from mental health issues today, and the Charlie Watkins Foundation aims to raise funds for trustees of the foundation to better support young people suffering from mental illness problems.
Mental health problems can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race or social background. Despite this however, studies have shown that certain mental illnesses affect men and women differently.
Along with other City based fighters, we are trying to raise £10,000 for the charity.
Having seen first-hand the overwhelming impact that mental health issues can have not only on the sufferer but their friends and family, the difficulty in accessing adequate treatment and the long and bumpy road to recovery or indeed remission, this is an issue which is close to my heart. Although the stigma surrounding mental health is improving we must do more to give people suffering in silence the support to seek the help they need.
It would be great if you could come support me on fight night and tickets can be purchased at www.fightingforcharity.com.
If you are sadly unable to come and see me get punched (repeatedly) in the face on the 18th, then donations big or small would be very much appreciated and can be made here.
Thanks so much,
Jess
