Youth Action BACK in The Community!
FYA will organise a series of intergenerational events throughout the year to encourage and increase community cohesion around the Fitzrovia Area. Young people will be organising a Christmas Community Dinner, a Community Street Planting Day, the Fitzrovia Summer Festival & the Fitzrovia Street Party
Situation
Many young people (YP) in Camden live in areas of high deprivation, have spent long periods of time in overcrowded housing during the Covid-19 lockdowns without a safe space.YP are so often portrayed negatively in the media yet they share the same concerns as adults about community safety and are affected disproportionally by violence and crime. YP have the passions, talents, and skills to contribute towards making our communities safer places but they are rarely given the opportunity to do so.
Solution
By organising a series of youth-led community events, YP will foster better community relationships and demonstrate the positive contribution they can make to the community. YP will be at the forefront of organising these events and will be responsible for all aspects of the event from stewarding, setting up & cleaning, to serving food and hosting on stage. Over 100 young people will volunteer at the events which will bring together 500+ residents, reconnecting and increasing their sense of community belonging once more.
Campaign Aims
- Provide opportunities throughout the year for residents to re-socialise post-pandemic and build relationships with each other once more
- To improve the skills and experience of young people
- To increase resilience among residents living opposite the Warren as usage of the space has increased
- To increase the sense of community, amongst local residents and young people
Events will be scaled down and still go ahead even if we don't hit our campaign target. Raising in excess of our campaign target will give us more opportunities to increase activities and and make events better with more for attendees to take part in.
Impact
Improved community relations through people from 'all walks of life' taking part in fun festival activities. A better connected and supported community - There will be plenty of signposting opportunities for YP and other residents to take part in other community sports, arts and supporting programmes and activities. YP planning and delivering the events will gain skills, experience and confidence (achieving AQA accreditation) and can access further education and employment opportunities.
