The Brightsides Atlantic Row will support the work of two great charities - Meningitis Now and Get A-Head
Barney Adlington was the son of Brightside crew member Rod. On Saturday 19th March 2005, Barney first complained of a headache. Less than 24 hours later, and despite the undivided attention of the best medical teams, he had died from meningitis.
Barney was just three years old.
Devastated by Barney’s cruel and untimely death, Rod and his wife Anna began researching different meningitis charities, determined to do something positive to reduce the prevalence and effects of this life limiting and frequently fatal disease. The stated vision of Meningitis Now chimed perfectly with the way they felt at the time. Meningitis Now aims for:
“A future where no one in the UK loses their life to Meningitis and everyone affected get the support they need to rebuild their lives”.
Having committed themselves to support Meningitis Now, they have been inspirational fundraisers ever since, driven by a determination to prevent other families from enduring the pain of losing a loved one to this terrible disease.
Fundraising efforts have included sporting events, endurance challenges, world record attempts, a huge barn dance, auctions, and now – rowing the Atlantic.
