The Borella Day Care Centre gives disadvantaged children the chance to obtain a pre-school education, all this in a safe, child friendly environment away from the daily abuses of life on the street.
Poverty stricken children living in slums outside the capital of Colombo rarely receive a nutritious meal, let alone an education. Many parents are unable to afford schooling which is privately run in Sri Lanka, unlike schools in the UK. Hope for Children has been supporting this project for over 15 years.
What we are doing:
Getting Children into Education – We are providing children living in slums outside of Colombo with the chance of an education. This includes morning and mid day meals as well as vocational skills development for school leavers and drop outs, free of charge.
Providing Shelter – The Centre provides the children with somewhere safe to stay during the day. In turn, this allows parents to earn an income through unskilled casual work whilst their children receive an education.
The Borella Day Care Centre was the first project to be fully funded by Hope for Children, and therefore holds a very special place in our history.
