NYBBGB seeks support to commission a major new work for brass & percussion from "the nation's favourite living composer" Paul Mealor
New music is a principal element of NYBB output, and the organisation has consistently been at the forefront of commissioning new works for band, which have included pieces by David Bedford, Richard Rodney Bennett, Elgar Howarth, Dominic Muldowney, Errollyn Wallen, Philip Wilby and more
We are currently in negotiations with the "nation's favourite living composer" [Classic FM, 2012] regarding the composition of a major new work for brass & percussion, to be premiered by the NYBB
Though known primarily for his choral music – including Royal Wedding favourite “Ubi Caritas” and Military Wives’ Christmas number one “Wherever You Are” - Mealor's musical origins also lie in the field of brass. For many years, Paul played euphonium with a number of bands in North Wales and maintains a great affection for the medium
To return a composer of such stature and unique compositional voice to the genre where he spent his formative years would be greatly enriching for the repertoire, as well as resulting in a tremendous new work and partnership for the NYBB and brass bands as a whole
