Visit the Museum of Lead Mining in the highest village in Scotland. See how they lived and learnt, the mine they worked in! Maybe find some gold!

This Scottish lead mining industry was most active 1700-1910. The rich, lead veins were mined high in the Lowther Hills. Share this history with a visit to our Visitor Centre Museum. Take a tour of the historic Miners’ Library, founded in 1756 and one of the oldest in Europe. Take a look into domestic life through time in Straitsteps Cottage. Join our guide on a walk into Lochnell Mine, the only underground tour in Scotland. Relax in the tearoom or browse our Gift Shop. Try your hand at gold panning with our expert guides! Enjoy the remote and beautiful surrounding countryside. We welcome school and specialist groups as well as touring parties. The Museum of Lead Mining is run by a not-for-profit charity, Wanlockhead Museum Trust, SC001508.
