Recently described as ‘a historic gem’ by Historic England, The Chapel was built c1690 by adapting and extending an existing farmhouse by the local ‘Independent’ congregation, so they could worship according to their own interpretation of The Bible and their consciences. It was, and still remains, a testament to a strong strand of independent thought within the social and religious life of our nation.
We are very fortunate that this wonderful building is still here today and has been so little altered over the centuries. But it is now under threat – the external render is failing, with the risk of water getting in to damage the timber frame. We urgently need to replace the render.
Thanks to people’s earlier generosity, we have been able to employ some of the best conservation professionals in developing the repair proposals, which now have planning permission to go ahead.
We still need to raise up to £400,000 to complete the work. We hope that most of this sum will come from national donors, but the more we can raise ourselves, the better we can demonstrate to them how widely valued The Chapel is.
Please help save this special building by donating now.
