Timespan has preserved and protected Scotland’s heritage, environment, art and culture for a generation and we want to do more. Timespan is a source of work, inspiration, learning and fun for one of Europe’s most fragile communities. In this remote area there is limited access to cultural opportunities. We are making use of creative approaches to learning including the use of new technologies to increase participation, particularly from young people.
Translocation Excavation is an innovative project in partnership with St Andrews University linked to the bicentenary of the Kildonan Clearances. The real-life excavation of the township site, close to Helmsdale, is mirrored in a virtual-world reconstruction showing what the township might have looked like 200 years ago. As the excavation progresses, the virtual world will change to reflect new discoveries from the site and become as accurate a representation as possible. The virtual world can be accessed onsite at Timespan and navigated with an avatar to explore longhouses, corn-drying kilns and much more.
We want to continue this groundbreaking project, develop the virtual world further and eventually make it accessible remotely. We want to keep pushing boundaries even though we’re a small rural museum. All this takes time and needs financial support of an estimated £45,000 for innovative development. By donating just £5 to our £1m rural endowment campaign, you'll help us ensure Translocation Excavation becomes a physical and digital reality.
Please donate and secure our future for a generation and beyond. Thank you.
