Hazel Davies was a long term supporter of Your Space. She was the kindest person you could meet along with being an enormous character, who was well loved by all that knew her at Your Space. She even used to call our Charity Founder and Service Manager, Rachel Hancocks "our Rachel."
Hazel, who sadly passed away suddenly on 18th December 2020 due to Covid and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease aged 77, was also an exceptionally dedicated mother to Andrew and Melanie, grandmother to Chloë, who works at Your Space as an Activity Worker, and Louis, Great Nain to Olivia and Aunt to Julie. If her family was happy, Hazel was happy. If they weren't she would be understandably upset but would fight to the bitter end to solve any issues her treasured family had, big or small. She was at the forefront of everything in her family's lives.
Hazel made a big impact on many people's lives and was a mother not only to Andrew and Melanie but a "mother figure" to several others, including younger close family friends.
At the age of four in April 1989, her son Andrew Edwards, who is Your Space's Fundraising Assistant, was diagnosed with autism. “Go home and watch Rain Man,” the specialist Hazel. “In all probability your son will be institutionalised.” Determined to prove the specialist wrong, Hazel , set out to give her son the best life possible.
Raising her son on her own, with help from her daughter Melanie Beckley, and encountering bureaucracy, bullying, and a lack of understanding from many we came across, Hazel's undoubtedly battling qualities came very much to fore. She had to do this more times than she should have had to.
Hazel dedicated her life to all her family, especially her son Andrew. Without her and the close knit family created by Hazel then Andrew's prognosis would have turned out to have been undoubtedly accurate.
So, with all this mind, Your Space are starting up this appeal in memory of Hazel Davies to make a permanent memorial to her in the form of an Autism Sensory Garden at our base in Llay Resource Centre. The target is £15,000 with £800 raised already from Hazel's daughter Melanie's "A Month of Sunday Half Marathons" in September 2021, a Commemorative Evening in memory of Hazel in October and other smaller donations.
The next big event that is scheduled towards the fund is a Pan North Wales Walk between 15th-18th August 2022 that is being undertaken by her son Andrew and her daughter Melanie.
Pleaser give generously towards the cause in memory of an inspirational person.
